We checked in with Rusty McCarthy recently to see what Sault Ste. Marie’s busiest musician is up to these days. Not surprisingly, he is a very busy man.
“I’m working on a double record, 31 songs in all. Everything from an Irish folk ditty to hard blues,” he told soospin.com. “I don’t really have a name for it yet except one is the green CD, which is a little more folk and rhythm stuff, while the blue CD is well, bluesy.”
Recording is happening at the Rec Room, McCarthy’s in-house studio. Transplanted Saultites long working in Toronto, rock steady bassist Pat Psihogios and keyboard wizard Doug Wilde are contributing, as are several other top notch local players. We will be sure to hear a good variety of instruments.
These will be Rusty’s sixth and seventh solo releases in his long and impressive career. And as though he’s not busy enough, he will also helm sound engineering and album art production duties.
As most folks advance in age they like to slow it down and rest on their accomplishments. That’s certainly not the plan for Rusty McCarthy.
“No, I’m not sure where it’s coming from, but the songs keep coming, so hey, it’s a double CD,” he says with a shrug, “so we’ll see. I’m just keeping it going.”
We can expect the new music to be out some time in January.
